Mask Monday: Eugene Alfred and Peter Diamond

The first time I saw Eugene Alfred’s work was Spirit Wrestler online gallery . You can also find more of Eugene’s work at his own site  .  This particular mask caught my attention because its a mosquito.  I hadn’t seen a Tlingit mask carving with so much red or mosquito for that matter.

The second illustration has two masks. Not being an expert,  it appears to be the a Chinese lion dance head and a Sun Mask holding the hand of a little girl. There isn’t a description that I can find but I can only guess that this person comes from a mixed background. Purple isn’t exactly a traditional color for northwest coast style of design. The purples are quite vivid matched with the autumn leaves. See more from Peter Diamond at http://www.peterdiamond.ca/
